All passengers have been evacuated and emergency services were at the scene immediately. The airport's southern runway is currently closed, but the northern runway is still in operation. This means that at these airports the restriction previously imposed limiting hand baggage to one item per person will no longer apply with effect from 7 January 2008.  However, airlines apply their own operational policies governing the number of items of hand baggage which may be taken in to the aircraft cabin.

It is expected that all long-haul flights, and 90% of all medium-haul flights, will operate today, Tuesday 30 October 2007. 
Passengers are advised to check-in as normal for any flight departing from London Heathrow and Manchester. 
Flights departing from Aberdeen, Birmingham, Belfast City, Bristol, Dublin, Dundee, Edinburgh, London City, Newcastle and Southampton remain unaffected.

The Terminal and all approaching roads have been closed by the Police.

Terminals 1, 2 &amp; 3 appear to be operating normally at this time.
