| With
baggage-handling going into meltdown, more travellers than ever
are arriving at their destination without their luggage. Recent
reports show that up to 10 air passengers lose their bags on
every flight, resulting in millions going missing every year.
It would appear that the major hub airports are the worst perpetrators,
including Heathrow and Gatwick. The Association of European
Airlines has revealed that there was on average 1 major baggage
system problem a week at Heathrow between April and June.
So
how can you best avoid the head-ache that is lost baggage?
There
are tracking devices available to put in your luggage, but
for a significant cost. Until these are mainstream and do
not pose a security risk, TMG Corporate recommend following
these tips to give yourself the best opportunity of meeting
your luggage at your destination.
TMG Corporate's tips:
- If
possible, use smaller, regional airports where baggage handling
is less strained.
- Check
your luggage in on time. Luggage checked in late may not
make it onto the flight and will follow on later, increasing
the chances of it going astray.
- Mark
the inside of your bag with your name and mobile-phone number.
If your labels are torn off, handlers will open the bag
to find contact details.
- Customise
your bag using ribbons or a coloured luggage strap to prevent
anyone else from accidentally taking it from the carousel.
- If
your bag goes missing, fill in the forms before leaving
the arrivals hall and do not leave without the telephone
number of the handling desk, a claim number and the name
of a supervisor.
- List
the items packed before leaving home and take a copy with
you (but not in your checked luggage). It makes the compensation
process much easier.

| If
you are looking to bypass the hassle of the airport completely
for trips into Europe then Railteam, an alliance of train
operators including Eurostar, Deutsche Bahn and SNCF,
believe that they |
| have
the answer for you. With the aim of providing seamless
and rapid rail transport across Europe, Railteam are working
to provide a Europe wide high speed train service that
they claim will offer a truly viable alternative to flying,
with the added benefit of being environmentally less damaging. |
|
Currently,
for the UK based traveller Railteam's offering is no more
than the Eurostar service with linked high speed routes that
will get you from London to Paris and Brussels in 3 hours
with onward connections to the likes of Frankfurt, Cologne
and Amsterdam in 6. However, published plans for the coming
decade include high speed links to some of Europe's business
hubs including Berlin, Milan and Madrid.
It
is difficult, therefore, to see this high speed network offering
a true alternative for the time stretched UK based business
traveller any time soon, especially for an A to B trip or
for anyone who is not London based (there are no plans to
link London with the rest of the UK by high speed link). However,
if your trip involves various destinations within the EU then
the train may prove to be not only the most environmentally
efficient form of travel but the most time and cost efficient
also.
We
await developments.
