BMI is trialling a paperless boarding system at Heathrow. The airline sends travellers their boarding pass in a text message once they have checked-in online. The text contains a two-dimensional bar code which is scanned at security and the boarding gate.
The carrier believes it will cut down the time spent by passengers at the airport. Like a boarding pass printed at home, the bar code text means passengers can bypass the check-in desk at the airport and proceed directly to the gate. However, the bar code will work only once to prevent the system being abused.
The service is available on BMI services from Heathrow to Edinburgh, Manchester and Belfast City. It will be rolled out on other services if the trial is successful.
